I can say the following things with certainty about SuSE 8.1: * it uses alsa by default * the alsa version is 0.9 something * yast configures recognised soundcards automatically * alsa has an oss compatibility mode, this requires 2 additional modules to be loaded; these 2 modules are loaded automatically when needed lsmod will show the alsa modules loaded * tcl, tk, studio, sox, and my soundcard (snd-ens1370) work fine out of the box * the snd-ens1370 module does not support /dev/sndstat (not implemented, device open error if access attempted); I don't expect this to be implemented ever * neither studio nor ViaVoice (IBM' speech recogniser) need /dev/sndstat to run Versions, for the record: SuSE 8.1: SoundStudio-1.0.6-286.i586.rpm alsa-0.9.0.cvs20020903-13.i586.rpm sox-12.17.3-330.i586.rpm tcl-8.4-48.i586.rpm tk-8.4-48.i586.rpm SuSE 8.0: SoundStudio-1.0.6-118.i386.rpm alsa-0.9.0_cvs20020320-12.i386.rpm sox-12.17.3-137.i386.rpm tcl-8.3.4-107.i386.rpm tk-8.3.4-107.i386.rpm You could upgrade to 8.1 (I found that worthwhile just about for the ghostscript 7.05), this would show whether there are any software issues involved. If it's a driver issue, the alsa driver might have improved. Apparently there was noticable improvement from alsa 0.5 to 0.9. SuSE has shipped alsa 0.9 as default for some while now. As a lot of the alsa developers work for SuSE, expect the alsa on SuSE to be more advanced than on other distributions. As another quick test, install snd from your CDs and test recording there. If it doesn't work either I'd say you have a sound driver issue. You could download the commercial OSS drivers and quickly install those in demo mode for testing, they should handle SB cards properly. > I will think about alsifying Studio as soon as ALSA actually document > anything. Hell, I'll even start teaching it in my course! studio has always worked fine with alsa. It did with alsa 0.5 way back, and does with alsa 0.9 now. As it happened I never tested studio on SusE 8.0 so can't say with certainty.
