The 'template' primitive is just a simple placeholder, if you want to output generic text (with no variables). It is useful for changing state or creating composite objects. I wrote a bit about it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/syntopia/3644799200/

Yeah, the CSG is exciting... I tried to play with it a bit using the sample script you posted on that CSG example page. It created a wierd red shape and a white box.
I guess povray template is the only one supported now for export? when I choose any of the other exporters it shows red for template primitives.
Looking forward to being able to get it to import into blender so I can try some CSG renders with luxrender or yafaray...

The PovRay template is the only one implementing some 'template' primitive instructions - but it is possible to extend the other templates as well. The raytracers must support CSG of course (Sunflow doesn't).
