Paul, Lets see if we can figure out the search problem first. Under the admin interface on the left there is a box that is title Quick Stats. Under this there is a value labeled "Indexed Media Files" if that has a value of zero then the search problem is because you haven't indexed your media library. Currently, you must kick of the indexing manually. There should be an option called "Batch Update" in the admin interface. If you click on this and follow the prompts you should be able to index your media library. Let me know if this works for you. As for the play all problem, I might need access to you site to see what you are talking about. If you can mail me the URL outside of the mailing list I should be able to help. Thanks.
