Polynesian stars

    I am just getting introduced to Stellarium, which is a program with beautiful
    displays. I also appreciate the amount of documentation you have created on
    the website about the program and its components.

    I have an interest in how different cultures have seen the stars, and was
    excited to find the Polynesian 'sky_culture'. I was wondering who created
    the data for this file and what books they used as sources.

    As a less pressing question, I was puzzled by the multiple
    constellation_names.xxx.fab files, as I could not see how they are being
    used. Is there a way to display the names from constellation_names.fra.fab
    easily or do I need to wait for another version of the program? It looked
    like eng.fab was hard coded in...

    Thank you for your efforts in producing such a wonderful program.

      You can change the language in the config.ini file.
      The line where it says

      sky_locale = eng

      can be changed to fra, esl,haw... and soon some other languages. You're right, I need to mention that in the FAQ.

      And if you've enabled the TUI in the config.ini file, on this line:

      flag_enable_tui_menu = true

      you can access a simple menu in Stellarium when you press M (on a US keyboard layout), where you can change the language and some other options.

        In creating new star name files, can other characters/fonts be specified? If, for example, I was to create a database of Chinese or Arabic names.

        As a related issue, is there a way to change the font size of the star/constellation names? I saw the gui font size is specified in config.ini, but the star names can be very small.

          We are waiting for another software library to add good support for other fonts and character sets.

          The CVS version includes some accented characters, mostly useful for Western European languages.

          Adding settings for other font sizes is a good idea.

            SDL_ttf http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf/
            seems to help to do it. Here are the sample lines.

            include "SDL.h"

            include "SDL_ttf.h"

            SDL_Surface screen, text;
            SDL_Color blue = {0, 0, 255, 0};
            TTF_Font *font;
            char str[256]; // a UTF-8 string

            font = TTF_OpenFont("/usr/share/ttf/sample.ttf", 20);
            screen = SDL_SetVideoMode(640, 480, 16, SDL_SWSURFACE);
            text = TTF_RenderUTF8_Solid(font, str, blue);
            SDL_BlitSurface(text, NULL, screen, NULL);

            I've made a Japanese DB set in UTF-8, and will provide it.

              My understanding is that SDL and opengl drawing functions do not mix, even though Stellarium uses opengl through SDL. Maybe I am mistaken. Have you tried that?

                No. I'd just googled and organized the results
                (e.g. http://sdl-im.csie.net/download/showfont.c ).

                I've no skill/experience, and I can't understand
                what you mean by "SDL and opengl ... through SDL".
                (Which are SDL functions, and opengl functions?)

      This is the source used:

      Unfortunately a lot has been lost to history.
