I've recently started getting back into playing my favorite 2600 games using Stella, but the most recent version (4.7.2) won't even start; No error messages, no windows, no event viewer entries... nothing. I suspect SDL to be the problem since I had a similar problem using DOSBox. There, I had to change an environment variable to get that running, though the recent Windows 10 updates made a "correction" that eliminated the need for the variable. Any ideas on how to fix Stella? |

Confirmed bug. It looks like I only ever considered two joysticks with the same name in testing. So when you add more, all subsequent ones are labeled the same as the second one. The fact that the 4 sticks actually work in Stella is good; it means this is simply a joystick naming bug which should be relatively easy to fix. I will look into it right away. I have been trying to setup my Stella installation to use four separate wireless Xbox 360 controllers as four paddles to play four-player Warlords with three of my friends. I didn't know if it would work given that the Atari only had two controller ports and the paddles had to be connected with a 'Y' cable, but I have been able to set it up correctly and even play with four controllers at the same time to control all four corners, but when I exit Stella and come back to play it later, half of my input mappings from paddle 1 and 2 have been merged with paddle 3, causing three of my controllers to control one corner all at the same time. Can you tell me if it was supposed to be able to work in the first place? I then installed Stella as I did on Wheezy with sudo apt-get install stella However Stella will not start. The window flickers then disappears. I can get it to start using the command stella -video software but the performance makes it unusable. It worked perfectly under the previous version of Raspbian Wheezy. Conditions: - Slackware Linux 14.1 (both 32 and 64 bit) - Nvidia drivers - SDL2-2.0.3 - Stella 4.6 - Fixed the permissions in /dev/input - Deleted ~/.stella and started clean As soon as I enable the Fullscreen option under Video Settings, all joysticks stop working. Disable that option, and they start working again. What does fullscreen have to do with joysticks?!? -- DWF |

The first thing I suggest in such a case is to go to the website of your video card manufacturer (Nvidia, AMD, Intel, etc) and download and install the latest video card drivers. hi all, i am new to this list, please forgive me if this isn't the right place to post. i am upgrading all my emu's and was excited to try the new sell, i am currently on 3.5 and trying to upgrade to 4.1 or 4.2. unfortunately, both versions crash. i have tried uninstalling AND deleting the files located in the update/stella folder. i have tried changing the video from d3d to OpenGL and it still crashes. but OpenGL seems to not crash as quickly. i just finished updating my win 7 64bit install to ensure everything is up to date also but still the crashes. if anyone has any ideas, i'm all ears. thanks a lot for any feedback. tony |

Stella 4.0 is now released, and it includes an option to always hide the mouse cursor (for use cases exactly like your own). I found it's not, so I send this a short reminder, so it doesn't get lost. Situation: SP =$FF I write "trapwrite $ff" to find out where the memory location is changed. While STA $FF will cause a trap, a "PHA" or "PHP" will not because is write to $1ff but that's actually just the same as $ff effectively. I'm currently in the process of porting Stella to SDL2 (libsdl.org). As such, I'm reworking how/when to display the cursor, so this is the right time to add an option to disable it entirely. I'll consider it for the 4.0 release. As for pause, there is a pause message, but it only appears every five seconds or so. I'm building a stand up ATARI arcade machine for my home and want to use Stella for the software however every time I hit pause or return to the game list there is a mouse cursor staring me in my face. I know I'm being picky but if it's not too troublesome would you be willing to add this feature? Hello, I'm trying to get Stella to work on the Raspberry Pi, specifically on the Pidora 18 distribution. As Stella is not in the Pidora repository I took the precompiled binary from the Raspian distribution, which kind of works. When I start Stella as root everything works fine (except for freezing the machine upon leaving Stella). But when I try to invoke Stella as normal user I only get "ERROR: Couldn't create OSystem". Adding the user to every conceivable group, including video, didn't help. Any suggestions on what kind of permission problem might keep Stella from starting up? Looking at the source code seems to suggest that OSystem::queryVideoHardware() fails right at the beginning, i.e., if(SDL_WasInit(SDL_INIT_VIDEO) == 0) if(SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_VIDEO | SDL_INIT_TIMER) < 0) return false; It should be also be noted that Stella works fine on Raspian, both as user and as root. I have the Windows 98 version of Stella (Stella-3.5.5_98_2k-win32.exe) After installing it on my Win 98 PC and running it I am getting an illegal operation pointing at the SDL.DLL file. As an experiment I installed that version on my WinXP PC and it ran fine. What information do you need from me to help in troubleshooting this? Derek |
