New name

It's STeven.
Not that I don't like Mr Seagal anymore, but the name is a bit confusing, and can lead people to disregard Steem SSE as a "serious" emulator (are we doing serious stuff?) It was a forum handle, where the joke could be understood by most, it's less appropriate out of forums.
The program is still Steem SSE, whose name has some internet presence.
Though I'm struggling to find another meaning for SSE! A reason could be a requirement for an SSE-enabled microprocessor (a Pentium 3 will do, it's not exorbitant), but it's far-fetched.

Actually, when I've found STeEM SSE for the first time, years ago, I was sure that SSE stands for an SSE-enabled compilation of STeEM ;)

All the best and hope you won't quit updating the best STe Emulator ever!

I had second thoughts about the name of the emulator. Not only 'SSE' is annoying, also 'Steem', which stands for STE Emulator, while we also emulate the STF series.
So why not Stem? It would stand for ST Emulator.
It seems to be the internal/primitive name, as many code parts start with stem and not steem (stemdos, stemwin, etc.)
The name already exists however, it's an emulator for an early console, the RCA Studio II.

It's possible that Steem is called Steem because there already was a Stem emulator, in active development until 2000 apparently.
There's also STEM (Stream Terminal Emulator) for BBC Micro:

We may as well keep the name and find a new meaning for both parts. It took time but here it is.

    Steem: ST Enhanced Emulator
Here ST means both STF and STE, it's an enhanced emulator.

    SSE: Sensei Software Edition
A sensei is a martial arts expert. This is a likely enough software house name, and not a direct reference anymore.

So now 'Steem SSE' stands for 'ST Enhanced Emulator Sensei Software Edition', as will be mentioned in the manual and release notes.

While we're at it, we may change the name of the debugger.
The name Boiler was certainly a joke playing on steem, steam, but it is also confusing.
In fact the release notes start with an explanation about this name.
The new name isn't too complicated: Steem SSE Debugger, or Debugger in short.

[Edit: removed too as we DON'T change the regular name]

I think you should keep the name Steem SSE, it is always confusing with name changes :) or is it just me?
The SSE can stand for pretty much anything, like Steven's Special Edition, or Super Special Edition to get a really 80s feel to it :D
I think renaming the Boiler (even though I like that name, I am a nerd...) to Debugger is a good move to get a more "serious feel" to it.

Yes, it definitely stays Steem SSE.
The answer to some questions actually can be found in the Dev Overview document:

The “Steem Engine” (STE emulating engine) name was conceived during this time of laughter, inspired by the ludicrous acronyms attached to existing ST emulators. The idea of smoke and rotating train wheels attached to the window sadly never became a reality.

After two iterations of a debugger, developing the CPU structure, we were ready to start the emulator proper. The debugger was developed first. Anthony sat down and wrote a CPU implementation, naturally riddled with errors but ready for the iterative development process that would follow.

It's not exactly what I thought. Still wonder why the internal name seems to be stem.

It will be Sensei Software Edition, but here's another one, quite ridiculous:
    Super Serious Emulator

    Note: commit 851 should read:
Call the program Steem 4 rather than Steem SSE
The /Bugs.txt is due to damn auto-complete.

Thinking on it again, since we're now at version 4, we may as well simply say 'Steem 4' instead of Steem SSE 4. There's no other Steem 4 anyway AFAIK, while there was for the 3 series. And it's possible that it will be Steem 4 for a good while, if we go through 4.1, 4.2, etc. It's not necessary to plaster SSE everywhere, even if Steem 4 is still a version of Steem SSE (in fact, I put "PROJECT: Steem SSE" in each source file some months ago).
Also, the filename could be Steem4.exe, whatever the 4xx version, Steem4D.exe for the debugger.
The main window would be named "Steem 4", or a user-chosen name (see manual). The former "Boiler" window is called "Debugger".
Precise version info is available in the info box, "About" page (press F1).

    There's a little problem though.
When you search steem sse, you get correct links, when you search steem 4, you get links to a cryptocurrency!

I changed my name but not my face! Finally found a way to put an avatar here, there's also one for Steem SSE project, unfortunately it doesn't spin.
