Sorry, I don't follow you... :-(

I can't download the software in a version such that gunzip can
actually unpack it. Is this intended?

As I wrote: I tried fetch (FreeBSD), ftp (OpenBSD), lynx, and just
now also w3m and NetScape.  How am I supposed to download the
pre-release? Not at all?
