Alrighty, here's my final version of the patch: It no longer uses '-fpic' -- only '-fPIC' It still compiles twice - with and without large branch pic It uses a variant on standard unix versioning that stays in sync with the st version, but addresses the api concerns. To apply: you need a clean tree, Gene's config.guess patch (re-attached), and finally my patch: (note the different -px options) tar xvzf st-1.3c.tar.gz cd st-1.3c patch -p0 < ~/st-1.3-guess.patch patch -p1 < ~/st-1.3-pkg.patch If you don't want the scripts to package the project in the upstream version, follow this with: rm -rf debian st.spec Leaving the spec file in the tar.gz is probably a good plan. redhat/mandrake users can then use: 'rpm -ta st-1.3.tar.gz' which is much more convenient than having to hunt for the spec file on the net. The debian/ directory is not really necessary if st gets into debian main, since then it could be recreated by maintainer patches, but it's kinda nice to have it available: 'cd st-1.3; debuild' -- Wesley W.
