SOLVED -- thanks to your input.

First I found a fonts.conf file on the web -- it's an XML file and the
one I used it attached. I put it in an accessible place.

Second, I added
export FONTCONFIG_PATH=path where I placed the fonts.conf file
to the script that calls statcvs
