My vote is something like last option. With branches i like to see point 
where the brach has forked, how much they differs comparing to the head, 
  lines of code graph and maybe number of commits graph and finally 
point when they are merged back.

BTW, sometime ago there was discussion about filtering tags, (symblic 
names patch). Do you have worked about that?
