Why does StarUML not permit me to drag an already-established instance
(object) from a previous diagram onto a new sequence diagram? The result is
that I end up having multiple copies of the same object throughout my model.

When you create a sequence diagram you should see in Model Explorer that it
has CollaborationInstanceSet parent node. If you create further sequence
diagrams as children of than node you will be able to share and drag from
Model Explorer any objects you create there.

Ah, okay. I have just been creating them separately under the Design Model, so
I get that whole tree structure every time I create a new one. I didn't know
that.
