I haven't tried it with STAF running as a service, but one of our tests had to run as a service and interact with the desktop. After registering the COM test object as a service, we had to interactively do the following: Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel Click on the icon for Administrative Tools Click on the icon for Services Highlight the service and right click on Properties Open tab for Log On and check box to Allow service to interact with desktop Then we start the service with "net start <name_of_service>". I think that this will also allow processes started by the service to interact with the desktop. Jay "David Schmidt" <david@...> To: "staf-users@..." <staf-users@...> Sent by: cc: staf-users-admin@... Subject: [staf-users] STAF as a service vs. process - seeing network drives ceforge.net 06/25/2003 02:38 PM All - I logged a 'support request' on SourceForge with this exact problem, but I'd like to open it up to the wider STAF community to see if anyone else out there has seen this behavior... I'm having trouble getting a set of problems I have in Win2k solved with STAF. I could use a little advice. First, I'd like to have a STAFproc running that can 'see' whatever network drives are connected. Second, I'd like to have STAFproc running as a service because starting STAFproc as a normal process runs into bug #737123 - unable to shut down with STAFproc window showing. Third, I need to have programs started by STAFproc 'interact with the desktop' so GUI automation tools can see what's going on. I've tried running STAF as a service logging on the 'Local System account', but then I get authentication failures when I attempt to net use to a drive that is already 'net used' under a different letter by (say) Administrator - probably a security 'feature' of Win2k. I've tried running STAF as a service logging on as 'Administrator'. This (sort of) solves my network drives issue as I can at least get connected to a network drive under a different letter. But processes started by STAF can't seem to interact with the desktop, so our GUI automation fails in this scenario. What can I do to have it all - network drives, be able to reboot without shutting down STAF, and interacting with the desktop? - David Schmidt ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers & Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner. I am trying to retrofit a VB6 DLL to use STAF so that apps that use this = DLL will be sharing the same STAF data with other processes. I am able to make STAFSubmit calls and retrieve the result strings just = fine, but it seems nearly every call to STAFRegister and STAFSubmit = results in a thrown error of "49"--even when everything works just fine. = =20 For example, I can register the VB process (just once), and STAF will = complete the registration and give me my handle and let me play with = STAFSubmit. But the call generates an error that must be trapped: 49? Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to respond to a real error. Like = when I go to retrieve a variable value that is empty. I cannot properly = determine whether the resultPtr and resultLength being 0 is due to an = empty variable value, or an error that has occurred. Any help out there on this one? Below are my declaration for those that think that might help. These = declarations work just fine in a much older version of pseudo-VB = (Rational's SQABasic). In SQABasic, everything works--even the return = codes--with these same declarations. Regards, Carl VB Declarations: =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Declare Function STAFregister Lib "STAF" Alias "STAFRegister" (ByVal = processName As String, handle As Long) As Long Declare Function STAFunregister Lib "STAF" Alias "STAFUnRegister" (ByVal = handle As Long) As Long Declare Function STAFSubmit Lib "STAF" (ByVal handle As Long, _ ByVal where As String, ByVal service As = String, _ ByVal request As String, ByVal requestLength = As Long, _ resultPtr As Any, resultLength As Long) As = Long |

Maxim, This is a known issue with STAF 2.4.x. It should be resolved in STAF 2.5.0 (scheduled to be released at the end of the month). As an alternative, you can use the STAF245-setup-win32.exe installation file. Basically, when InstallShield installs the product, it attempts to create an Uninstaller that uses a local JVM (since you are running the .jar and not the .exe, which has a bundled JVM), and it searches for a list of pre-defined JVMs, which does not include 1.4.1. This is resolved in ISMP 5.0, which STAF 2.5.0 will use. Again, if you use STAF245-setup-win32.exe, the installation should be successful. Let us know if you are still having problems. It's possible that it might take some time for the new change to take effect. STAF just uses whatever it gets back from tcp/ip as the hostname. You might also try rebooting the 2000 SP3 machine, to see if that has any effect. The machine name is different. Actually when I was trying out the various service on the command line, I would have to use the actual machine name -- they would fail if I used 10-96-9-245. I started to run into problems when I ran the Java demo program -- resources unavailable, status not updated, unable to display logs etc... I checked the DNS setting according to the FAQ. It seems OK to me (no difference from the other machine).
