Please could you try re-installing from the beginning, following my 
(modified) instructions to the letter.

This is too bizarre.  I'm trying a reinstall from scratch and it 
downgraded udev for me on the dist-upgrade.

I've just done another reinstall, from scratch, and it all worked as 
expected, including the udev downgrade.

debian volatile is where they bung quick changing stuff like virus 
scanner patterns.  (I.E. stuff where the changes are not too large and 
you don't want to be forced to wait for the next update).

It gets installed in /etc/apt/sources.list by the standard install.

Having it should cause no problems.
