The differences start at "initrd-tools: 0.1.84.2.ssi4" which comes from
the initrd.
What version of initrd-tools do you have installed?
0.1.84.2.ssi4
You're doing an etherboot here? What version?
I used: Etherboot 5.4.4 (2008-09-26) Image Generator at:
http://rom-o-matic.net/ rom-o-matic
Is it doing old-style
etherboot or PXE?
ETHERBOOT
Is /tftpboot/initrd the same as the initrd your first
node is booting off? (initrd.img-2.6.12-ssi-686-smp) If you're doing an
old-style etherboot is /tftpboot/combined up to date? (I.E. does
/tftpboot/combined == /tftpboot/kernel + /tftpboot/initrd)
It looks like the files are different sized so I doubt it.
In fact, please post a ls -lR of /tftpboot
jhansen01:~# ls -lR /tftpboot

I am using RTL-8139 nic with etherboot for the same without floppy emulation in cdrom drive. My interconnect is a eepro100. Is this enough info? If not, is this output sent to log someplace? /var/logs? My 2nd node is currently unbootable on its own right now, so I will need to install something. Could you please provide a little more info about the on-screen messages.
Here's what a boot of a 2nd node looks like when it works:

There is actually a way to do this, use ssi-addnode-dynamic:
# ssi-addnode-dynamic --help
ssi-addnode-dynamic [options]
--help This message
--verbose Verbose output
--startip=value First IP address for dynamic nodes
--endip=value Last IP address for dynamic nodes
--clustertab=value Cluster node table [/etc/clustertab]
--bootloaderconf=value Bootloader configuration file [/boot/grub/menu.lst]
I've never used it myself, but it should work.

On to the next step. I have installed fresh server install of debian and open ssi. I have started the process of adding the new node. I have etherboot on 'child1' server connecting to the interconnect and run 'ssi-addnode' on my init node, and successfuly written the configuration script. The child node appears to start to process of adding itself to the cluser and i see where it is found the ramdisck and mounted root (ext2 filesystem). I also see where it has added my interconnect module (eepro100.c etc... Now at the bottom of the screen it appears stuck on this line: input: IMExPS/2 Generic Exploerer Mouse on isa0060/serio1 checking the init node with "cluster -v" only shows: 1: UP I have rebooted both nodes with no luck. I also tried booting without the moust attached. I get to the statement about eepro100.c and it still just hangs. again "cluster -v" just shows "1: UP" What now? In kernel 2.6.26 the driver exist. The module name is atl1e.

Nowhere near that bad, it's just some of the packages in openssi-lenny
(none of which are particularly user-facing) and all the packages in
openssi-lenny-extras:
Package: gnome-power-manager
Package: grub
Package: hal
Package: libdevmapper1.02

Package: udev

That's the idea. This is a place where we seem to have some bugs at
the
moment, some multi-threaded processes seem to be showing up as
unmigrateable.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply :)
So I understand -
1. Kernel is really alpha,
2. no XEN version of the kernel, so I can't run it as domU/guest
3. User space is a bit Etch ? Does that mean things like older
gnome/evolution/other_apps versions?
If I want to shutdown one node for hardware maintenance, is it possible
to migrate all the processes of that node to another node before the
intentional poweroff? (instead of migrating the whole VM via xen)
Since it is alpha... I may play with it but not install it on mission
critical servers. Is there some version of OpenSSI + OS that is mission
critical quality?
lspci for my NIC is :
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. L1 Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter (rev b0)
FYI - I thought of xen because of my NICs drivers, and also because I
have 8GB RAM on my two nodes, and the OpenSSI kernel is only 32bit, so
I thought that instead of running one 64bit OS, I can run two OpenSSI
nodes on the same XEN host, and thus utilize all of my RAM.

Frankly OpenSSI is currently not as stable as it could be, though it's
getting better. With an OpenSSI-HA setup you'll definitely be better
protected against hardware problems, but you likely to run into more
problems caused by the software.
However the real reasons I consider my OpenSSI Lenny port "alpha"
quality are:
1. The kernel is my port of the latest OpenSSI CVS (based on Linux
2.6.11) to Linux 2.6.12 (and now Linux 2.6.14). It can't be
considered even "beta" quality until Roger has had time to look
at it.
2. The user space hasn't been fully upgraded to Lenny, some bits of
it are still Etch. Some of this is due to our old kernel, we'll
need at least 2.6.18 for full Lenny compatibility, some of it is
due to laziness.

That should be do-able, though I haven't made a Xen domU version of the
OpenSSI kernel for a while. (domU is the Xen terminology for a guest).

With Xen you can dynamically reduce the amount of memory available to a
domU. (Within limits of course!)

No, drbd, on OpenSSI doesn't support primary/primary, it doesn't need
it
due to OpenSSI's CFS.
If you made a primary/primary drbd at the dom0 (Xen host) level, you
could just tell OpenSSI that it was a shared disk.

CFS would be easier. I have no experience on using OCFS2, so you'd be

Ok, here's the exact problem - from laziness I'm just using the same
e2fsprogs (which includes libblkid1) as I used in Etch.
The Etch version of e2fsprogs (1.39+1.40-WIP-2006.11.41+ssi1 (sic!))
depends on libdevmapper1.02 which is no longer available in Lenny (it's
been replaced by libdevmapper1.02.1 (the "1.02" and "1.02.1" are not
package versions - they're part of the package name)).
So, either I provide a version of libdevmapper1.02 in
openssi-lenny-extras or I port our e2fsprogs changes to the Lenny
version, (1.41.3-1).
For now I'll take the easy way out, a copy of libdevmapper1.02 is now in
openssi-lenny-extras.
You should be able to do an
apt-get dist-upgrade
to upgrade libblkid1 and the other stuff from e2fsprogs.

Hi, I am thinking about an OpenSSI two nodes cluster with mirrored disks between the nodes, probably using drbd. I need an uptodate desktop environment, and high availability. I would like to know how stable and reliable is the OpenSSI for lenny. Seeing that it is being kept in the directory called alpha got me a bit worried, since I would like this server to operate without an admin babysitting it. Also, my hardware has a network interface that has a driver only in the latest 2.6.26 kernel, so it probably means that I would have to recompile the kernel for that driver, or could I just install a XEN on the two nodes and run OpenSSI as guest(?) In which case I may also be able to live migrate one of the nodes to the other node for hardware maintenance. Or would the RAM pose a problem in that scenario? (i.e. the first guest will take up all the ram of the machine, so there will be no ram space to migrate the second one in.) No resolution because I couldn't understand why ssi-addnode was not working.

That is normal, before ssi-addnode is run.

So ssi-addnode hasn't been run yet.

I've not yet been able to understand why ssi-addnode wasn't working.

No, ssi-addnode does more than just edit the clustertab, it also creates
the /cluster/nodeXXX directory.
We have to find out why ssi-addnode is not working.

Yup, that's wrong. We need blkid.tab as a CDSL, it can be different on
each node.
Could you please show the results of:
apt-cache policy libblkid1 e2fsprogs
If the SSI versions are not installed do:
apt-get install libblkid1 e2fsprogs
rm /cluster/node*/etc/blkid.tab
blkid
mklocalfile /etc/blkid.tab
When the correct version of libblkid1 is installed then the blkid, fsid
programs should write-through the blkid.tab cdsl instead of overwriting it.

Mine doesnt look right...
This looks like the problem Sergi Barroso was running into.
What does /etc/blkid.tab look like? Is it a CDSL (i.e. a symbolic link
that looks like this:
$ ls -l /etc/blkid.tab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 2009-03-19 13:24 /etc/blkid.tab ->
/cluster/node{nodenum}//etc/blkid.tab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 116 2009-04-2- 19:30 /etc/blkid.tab
What does:
find /cluster/ -name blkid.tab 2>/dev/null
show?
It shows:
/cluster/node1/etc/blkid.tab
/cluster/nodetemplate/etc/blkid.tab
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stay on top of everything new and different, both inside and
around Java (TM) technology - register by April 22, and save
$200 on the JavaOne (SM) conference, June 2-5, 2009, San Francisco.
300 plus technical and hands-on sessions. Register today.
Use priority code J9JMT32. http://p.sf.net/sfu/p
