I missed that in my excessive focus on line 14. If you want to PXE/Etherboot another node into the cluster, then default in grub has to point to a SSI kernel. (And you have better booted the default kernel. Acually, it would be better if ssi-ksync-network ignored the default and just figured out what you had booted and put that into the /tftpboot directory.)
