Unfortunately I don't know very much about this stuff myself. The
approach I took originally was to copy how the 'clock-applet' did stuff
and adapt that to suit. This page on the SSHMenu web site documents
what goes where on Debian/Ubuntu and it may give you some hints:

You might also get some hints by running:
locate clock-applet
And look at the files listed.
