Other than doing
portsnap fetch
portsnap update
I assume  we are at the mercy of the port maintainers.  

Sshguard does eventually get updated in ports. Even though I run sshguard as beta often, when the ports release the new code, I go back and bold it from ports just to verify the ports work. 

As an aside, I run
pkg version -v | grep needs
after doing the portsnap update to highlight the programs that need updating.
