This is an interesting idea! It could work really well.

On the flip side, the advantage as you have already mentioned regarding the current developer controlled and maintained binary is that the people who maintain this  know what is going on and perhaps more importantly it is trivially simply for end users to install and upgrade.

I am all for flexibility. However, end user simplicity is also something to consider.
