It turns out I am getting handles.  I was just trying to print
them and they're unprintable.  In bytes, I get these 3 handles
for 2 directory opens and a file open:

00 00 00 00
00 00 00 01
00 00 00 02

Maybe this will help someone else who's expecting them to actually
be _printable_ strings as I was.
