so I figured out part of this.

I apparently need to disable blocking on the channel for this to work
properly.  Since I'm executing multiple commands, I have to re-enable
blocking to set up a new channel, then disable blocking to work with the
channel.  This is an ok solution, but it doesn't seem quite right.. I
still feel as though I'm doing something wrong.

Additionally, now I'm getting the 'in' events I want, except when I go
to read, there's nothing there.  Also, I'm not getting 'err' events
(stderr) nor is there anything to read there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
