Viktor S. Grishchenko wrote patch for src/compose.php that allows to reply
to email (or forward it) with different encoding and don't loose 8 bit
symbols. It works better if used together with recode/iconv patches.
But recode/iconv patches have one problem. They work better, if used with
Unicode locale or if source and destination charsets are similar. For
example, you won't have problem if you use koi-8r, windows-1251 and
iso-8859-5, but you will have problem if you also use 8-bit symbols from
other iso-8859-x or other windows-125x charsets.
I am thinking about adding compose.php and recode/iconv patches to SM
core. Or at least I'll talk about it with others. But before that I am
planning to add special checks, that use email charset -> user charset
conversion only in some cases. If user's charset is not utf-8 or email and
user charsets don't match certain combination, then recode/iconv patches
will convert strings to html codes.
I think that safe charset combinations are:
Maybe somebody knows other charsets that have matching symbols and can be
safely converted from one to other?
