If you have FollowSymLinks turned on in your httpd.conf, you can just use Unix symbolic links. I currently have a /squirrelmail symlink pointing to /squirrelmail-1.4.2 (and it pointed to /squirrelmail-1.4.1, /squirrelmail-1.4.0, and /squirrelmail-1.2.10 in the past). It makes upgrading a breeze for me, and I can always go back to a previous version if there's trouble. Also, I have a DNS alias set up (webmail and www both resolve to the same IP address), with virtual hosting in httpd.conf: <VirtualHost *> ServerAdmin web...@ss... DocumentRoot /usr/global/web/squirrelmail Servername webmail.ssc.wisc.edu php_value session.gc_maxlifetime 28800 php_value session.save_path /www/sm-sessiondata </VirtualHost> So, either http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/squirrelmail or http://webmail.ssc.wisc.edu will work for Squirrelmail.
