[SM-STABLE] error logging in

Hi I'm using squirrelmail 1.4.0 and apache 1.3.20 with php4. I've got an
IMAP4 server running fine and SMTP (Sendmail)
 
When I try and login, it seems to log, the left nav bar starts to load but
stays blank and then it redirects to the error page "error - Unknown user or
password incorrect."
 
However, I've verified that IMAP is indeed running on the standard port by
telneting to localhost:143 and it answers. What's more, I can do an IMAP
LOGIN <username> <password> and it connects and says the login was
successful. Anyone got a clue what's kicking me out?
