Hello all. First, let me say that I'm brand new to this list, and I apologize in advance for something that's probably been discussed (but I didn't find in the list search). I installed two identical squirrelmail systems (same version of php, imapd, Apache 2.0.40 etc.,) and discovered that one worked fine, and one exhibited all sorts of bizarre behavior. In both cases, the basic squirrelmail install worked fine, but several plugins acted up on my RedHat 8.0 system (with a fresh install of 8.0), while they worked fine on my RedHat 8.0 system (that had been upgraded from 7.3). I spent at least a week trying to figure this one out... both systems are at 8.0 and have RedHat supplied rpms for all services (Apache, etc.) As it turns out, there is _something_ about the /etc/php.ini file supplied with RedHat 8.0 that makes some plugins go crazy (specifics given later if you want). The 8.0 system that was previously upgraded from RedHat 7.3 actually preserved the 7.3 version of the php.ini file, and this system worked fine with all my plugins. In order to "repair" the 8.0 system with the fresh OS install, I simply copied the php.ini file from the system that was previously at 7.3. That fixed everything, including all plugin behavior. Replace it with the RH 8.0 version of the php.ini, and things break again. Mind you, I'm not a php programmer and the php.ini is big and ugly and I don't know a thing about it. I'm surprised, however, that there is a dependence on this file such that one RedHat install (7.3) would work when an 8.0 install won't, for the same version of php. If I hadn't have had the (previously) 7.3 system to use as a point of reference, I'd have _never_ gotten squirrelmail working on my new 8.0 system. I still have no clue what specifically is wrong with the newer, default php.ini supplied with RH 8.0, though when I do a diff with the functional RH 7.3 version, they are quite different. Interestingly, both systems are at php 4.2.2. Is there a known problem with the default RH 8.0 php.ini file and squirrelmail? Or am I freak of nature? (don't answer that:). If anyone is curious, I can supply the broken php.ini file and the list of plugins I have that won't work with it. Mind you, I didn't break it myself... it's the default php.ini installed with RH 8.0. It might help others who are running squirrelmail on machines with fresh RedHat 8.0 installs. My version of squirrlemail is 1.2.8. Neall |
