Did you select "Allow all Schemas" under "Oracle" tab in alias properties?

[Squirrel-sql-users] Can't see table schema through SYNONYM, but SQL Developer can see it in "Other Users"

I have read-only credentials for an Oracle database.  We have to access many of the tables through a synonym.  I can query them, but I can't see the column definitions.  I can do completion on the column names in the SQL buffer, but I'd still like to be able to see the column definitions.

Someone else here uses SQL Developer to access the same database, using the same credentials, and if they go to the "Other Users" section, they're able to see the column definitions.

Is there an analog of this in SQuirreL, or is it not possible to do this at this time?

Mark,
First, I believe ojdbc14.jar is a pretty old driver.  The current version is ojdbc5.jar, I believe.  I use it on Windows 7 64 bit successfully.
Second, you need to properly set up both driver and alias:
1. In driver, make sure the path to the driver is included in "Extra Class Path" tab:
In my setup, it lists C:\squirrel-sql\plugins\ojdbc5.jar
2. Once you set this, make sure that the class names oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver and oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver appear in Class Name dropdown once you clicked on "List Drivers" button.
3. In Alias setup URL jdbc:oracle:thin:@<server_name>:<port>:<SID> make sure that <server_name> part is properly resolvable from your PC: I would use fully-qualified <server_name.domain.tld> to be sure.

No, it won't prevent the typo, it will just prevent the typo causing you 
to do unintended things from Squirrel.

If you regularly make that particular typo when coding SQL then you have 
problems that changing the delimiter in Squirrel will not cure...

I'm really sorry you this happened to you.

Please go to menu File --> New Session Properties --> Tab SQL and see if the statement separator is set to ";". This will probably be the reason for your troubles:
SQuirreL interpreted "UPDATE TABLE_A WHERE STATUS = 'X' ; AND KEY='Y'" as two statements. The first "UPDATE TABLE_A WHERE STATUS = 'X'" was executed correctly and the second "AND KEY='Y'" was erroneous.

To prevent this problem you may change the separator to a different character or string.

[Squirrel-sql-users] Problem running SQuirreL in Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity

I just installed SQuirreL 3.3.0 (the SQL client, not the mail client) on
Ubuntu 11.10. When I go to run it (either through the unity interface or
direct from a terminal) the startup window opens (showing that it's
loading), it shows the icon in the unity bar, but the main window never
opens. When I run it from the terminal, no output is seen to the console,
nor have I been able to find any information in the system logs I've looked
at (though I don't know if it logs anything there, nor even which log it
might log to. I was thinking it might be a gnome issue and that might be
logged somewhere but I don't know where). Any insight would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!

Do not use sqljdbc_2.0.1803.100_enu driver, use sqljdbc_3.0.1301.101
_enu, at least one bug concerning schemas was fixed:

411695 getSchemas should return schema information
       In previous versions of the driver, the driver returned user 
information instead of the schema information.The driver will now return 
schema information and supports pattern matching for schema name per 
JDBC spec.

Yes, now I can. The DatabaseMetaData.getSchemas() returns some of the 
schemas with db_* prefix, for instance db_int. However getProcedures() 
returns the procedures in schema called "int" (no db_* prefix). This is 
the reason why I cannot list them, as I cannot select "int" schema. I 
changed the schema name in debugger "db_int" -> "int" and voila, I can 
see the procedures. The SQL Server Manager has no schema with db_* 
prefix, this seems to be artificially added somewhere.

driver from Microsoft (sqljdbc_2.0.1803.100_enu) against SQL Server 2008 
R2.

I have found newer Microsoft drive (sqljdbc_3.0.1301.101_en). With this 
driver no schemas are listed at all. The schema level is missing in 
objects tab and the procedures are listed. The fully qualified name 
includes the schema name "int". However I cannot see the procedure 
source with the "script procedure" command, it displays only "go".

No, this is not implemented in MS SQL plugin, but it should be quite 
easy to implement:

Also the source can be seen: Right-clicking a procedure and selecting 
SQL Server brings up a submenu Script and Execute items.

I cannot list the stored procedures even as SQLAdmin. The procedures are 
not in default "dbo" schema, they are in different schema. Listing 
procedures in dbo schema workf fine.

[Squirrel-sql-users] Support for MS SQL

Hi,

I use SquirrelDB as my primary database tool for many different 
databases (PostgreSQL, DB2, Oracle, ...) and I like it. However with MS 
SQL it seems that the support is lacking. There are some issues:

* I cannot see source of stored procedures - is this supposed to work?

* I cannot see list of stored procedures. Current user doesn't have 
right to see procedure source but he can execute them. In MS SQL 
Management Studio I can list procedure names. This is quite unfortunate.

* Sometimes I cannot list table names even if I can list them in MS SQL 
Management Studio with the same user

How can I debug what's going on?

I copied the statement from Paulus's mail quoted below. The statement is 
not correct SQL syntax but from the context of the original mail the 
statement is good enough to make sense in its context.

But you are right, it would have been clearer if I had written

UPDATE TABLE_A ... WHERE STATUS = 'X'

The syntax highlighting is provided by the syntax.jar plugin.

To enable go to Plugins => Summary and ensure, that the checkbox "Load 
at startup" is checked for the syntax plugin. If you change the 
checkbox, please restart SQuirreL. But i think, you have already done 
this steps.

If you have still troubles, please have a look at the log file (There is 
a folder called .squirrel-sql in your home directory which contains the 
log directory).

I'm really sorry you this happened to you.

Please go to menu File --> New Session Properties --> Tab SQL and see if 
the statement separator is set to ";". This will probably be the reason 
for your troubles:
SQuirreL interpreted "UPDATE TABLE_A WHERE STATUS = 'X' ; AND KEY='Y'" 
as two statements. The first "UPDATE TABLE_A WHERE STATUS = 'X'" was 
executed correctly and the second "AND KEY='Y'" was erroneous.

To prevent this problem you may change the separator to a different 
character or string.

Recently I got a very bad accident because I wrongly wrote the SQL statement as follows:
UPDATE TABLE_A WHERE STATUS = 'X' ; AND KEY='Y'; 
 
I found that SquirreL detect the error (there is an ':' in the mid of statement there), however I found that SquirreL actually is executing this part:

This incident had given me a lot of problems. 
My question is whether this kind of problem had been resolved in later Squirrel release?
