[Squirrel-sql-users] Squirrel graph plugin question

Hello.

I have just configured Squirrel to connect to my PostgreSQL database. 
Most things are working... But when I add my tables to a graph, none of 
the relationship arrows show up.

The (PK) and (FK) designators do show up, so I think I have my foreign 
key relationships set up correctly, but the arrows aren't there...

Any suggestions?

Hello,

If you select the table in the tree, then click on the "Columns" tab
you will see everything that is available using JDBC (which is much
more than SQL-Plus' describe command).  If you see any info missing
that you would like to have, take a look at the feature requests (I
think there is already a request to "simulate" this SQL-Plus feature
in the SQL editor - maybe you could embellish that feature request if
it doesn't address all of your needs)

You seem to be without options when attempting to connect with *any*
Java application to a Sybase server with charset = roman8 :

   10106   270704   jConnect now kills the connection when the
                    server's default charset is unsupported in Java
                    (and the client has not made a specific request
                    for a charset).  When the client does not request
                    a specific charset, jConnect will attempt to use
                    the server's default charset. However, there are
                    cases where the server charset does not map to
                    Java (because there is no corresponding converter
                    in Java -- an example would be the roman8
                    charset).   Previously, jConnect would allow the
                    Connection to be made, but the connection would be
                    unusable, as all further communications with the
                    server would result in an exception.  jConnect now
                    throws at JZ0IB exception and does not allow the
                    connection to be made.

Just to be clear - QueryTokenizer *was* a utility class that was used
to break up the selected region of the editor into individual
statements to send to the database.  Now it is more of a framework to
allow plugins to implement their own query tokenizing behavior. (One
example is statement separator which is different depending on what
database you are using - "GO" for Sybase/MS-SQLServer, ";" for
others).  This is available now in CVS; the first release to include
it will be 2.5 slated for late March.  I was commenting that the new
DB2 plugin might be able to take advantage of it by providing support
for "CALL ...".  The Oracle plugin uses this framework to parse
"create procedure/function" statements by allowing any embedded ";"
and terminating the statement on "/".  The main issue with executing
stored procs this way is that we would need to use CallableStatement
instead of merely executing everything with Statement.  I'll have to
look at SQLExecuterTask to see how do-able this would be.  It would be
nice for all of the plugins to support stored procedure execution, but
that's not likely to make it into version 2.5.

No problems in this case for me. I tested on a Linux system. It also
works with absolute pathes and random locations for the database file.

I tested creating databases, tables and editing/adding values with
SQuirreL and open existing databases created by other tools with
SQuirreL. Everything works fine. No Problems occurred.
In case i make further tests and/or use SQLite/SQuirreL productive, i
will give another state report.

I looked at some examples on IBM's website of calling stored
procedures from various apps (CLI, Java, C).  It appears that "db2"
CLI parses the "call ..." and handles it different than "select * from
.."  or some other such query.  I think we may need to detect this
"call..." and handle it differently (instead of using Statement, using
CallableStatement).  The new pluggable QueryTokenizer could be used
for part of this task, but I'll need to see how we are handling
CallableStatements (I don't know that we are currently so that might
be new functionality as well).  If you come across any additional
information (using Statement to execute stored procs for instance)
please send it my way.

There is a DB2 plugin available in the latest snapshot release (It's
new and will be available in 2.5).  What is the error message you get
when you execute that call as a statement?

Can you execute a zOS (mainframe) DB2 stored procedure from Squirrel? This 
is handy for testing the stored proc. I haven't been able to make it work. 
For example:

call SCHDB1.J5143106(10,1,@x1,@x2); does not work.

I don't think you can do this interactively with DB2 like you can with 
MySQL. I may not have the latest DB2 JDBC driver but I'm not sure this is 
the problem. If there's no way to do it is there a plugin available? I 
looked and couldn't find one. If there is no plugin available can any plugin 
experts tell me if it's feasible to write one. I've briefly looked over the 
example and MySQL plugin code and would be willing to take a crack at it.

I decided to try my own advice.  I downloaded the jdbc "pure" java
driver.  It looks to be an all-in-one database engine and driver that
will read sqlite database files for you.  I added the
driver to SQuirreL then made an alias using

jdbc:sqlite:test.db

The file it creates when I connect is called "test.db" and it is
located in the same dir as squirrel-sql.bat.  I tried giving an
absolute path but on WinXP it doesn't seem to like c:/test.sb (I
consistently get out of memory error SQLExceptions)

Object tree in SQuirreL seems to work for basic types (tables and
views).  Be careful though, I did notice that the developer of this
driver doesn't claim that it is complete, so there may be things that
SQuirreL asks for that aren't given.  If you notice any weird
behavior, drop us a note (Please include any exceptions from
squirrel-sql.log and tell us exactly what you did to reproduce it when
describing problems)

In general, as long as there is a JDBC driver for a database, then
SQuirreL can access it.  Having said that, I know of no one that has
reported use of SQuirreL with the SQLite database.  If you have one
already setup and would like to use a JDBC driver (maybe
http://www.zentus.com/sqlitejdbc/) to access it, let us what your
experience is with it.

-n says use "native" look and feel (which I'm guessing on Suse isn't
working properly in your case).  Try just using -m which uses "metal"

[Squirrel-sql-users] Possible to display XMLType columns in contents tab?

I recently began using SQuirrel SQL, but have hit an obstacle and was
wondering if anyone here knows a solution. (I have already searched Google
and the issue tracker and mailing list archives on Sourceforge.)

I'm connecting to an Oragle 10.2.0.1.0 database using the Oracle Thin
driver. One of the tables whose data I need to display has a column of  type
XMLType, and in the contents tab, will only display either 'Unknown (2 007)'

I have added ojdbc-14.jar, xmlparserv2-10.1.0.2.jar and xdb-10.1.0.2.jar, in
that order, to the  Extra Class Path tab of the Oracle Thin Driver, but this
makes no difference.

Any suggestions? Other JDBC clients, such as Aqua Data Studio, display
XMLType columns without any trouble, so this is not a general JDBC issue.

Hello! 

We have one production database, one testing database and one development database. I need some way how to clear and permanent identify, that I am on production database. For example in PuTTY, I have different font color (red one) on production operating system. Is there any way, how to do this in SQuirreL? 

So I want to have different Syntax Style (menu -> File -> New Session Properties -> Syntax -> Syntax Styles) for each Alias (database connection). And I do not want to have independent SQuirreL installations. How can I do this? Passing different startup configuration file? Or somewhere in SQuirreL GUI? 

>From my point of view, this can be done by having different SQuirreL BAT file, inside which can be different -DuserData directory, in which I can have my own settings inside ".squirrel-sql\plugins\syntax\prefs.xml". Is it right and preffered solution?

The first version of the installer didn't have the jxl jarfile in it.
Try re-downloading and re-installing and let us know if you still are
having this issue.
