My suspicions were correct then. We've had reports from users with
this setup and similar symptoms in the past. Sun implemented a fix
that some users (with nvidia cards) said didn't solve the problem when
they continued to use desktop effects.

I heard reports that this affected NetBeans users as well. I use
Eclipse, and no desktop effects and have never seen the symptoms. As
I understand it, there were changes in the AWT layer that manifest
these issues. We're at the mercy of the JVM - suddenly, what has been
working for us for years is now no longer working. If you come across
a work-around please forward it to us :)
