There is a preference that falls short of what you are asking for, but
could help. If you position the mouse cursor in the row where the title of
the column is, right-click and choose "Always adjust all column widths", it
will attempt to size the column width "smartly". It doesn't work well with
all look-and-feels, but may work for you. Try it.
