Hi Richard, I've moved this back to the users list in case anybody has some ideas. I can't give any real advice about this as I've never had the problem. Its possible that your Java fonts aren't been mapped correctly to your X fonts. This link has some more info about it http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/intl/fontprop.html.
