Folks,
One of the existing features in SQuirreL is going to make some of my
development harder, and before I put in that effort I would like to ask
if anyone is using that feature. The alternatives I am considering
could include eliminating the feature or making a significant
modification to it.
The feature is setting various fields to show a standard description of
the data rather than the data itself. For example, instead of showing
"011010010", it would say "Binary". The feature is enabled/disabled on
a per-data-type basis under "Session Parameters"-> "SQL", and is labeled
"Show String Data for Columns of these Data Types".
My questions are:
1. Do you use this feature?
2. What benefit does it give you (e.g. performance, reduced clutter in
display, etc.)?
3. What types of data do you use it for?
4. If the reason you use it is performance, can you give us an example
or two of the difference between turning the feature on (i.e. showing
only the description of the data) and turning it off (i.e. showing the
actual data)?
Thank you for sharing your insight.
