I haven't used Interbase/Firebird for a while but I've previously had
SQuirreL successfully connected to it with both the old Interclient
driver and the new Firebird JDBC driver. What exactly do you mean when
you say "the driver never shows up as one that may be selected"? Are you
creating a new driver definition, adding the driver jar(s) to the extra
class path, saving it but the new driver doesn't show in the Driver
dropdown in the Alias maintenance dialog?
A couple of things to look at:
- I've had a reported problem where changing the jars that a driver
definition refers to doesn't change the icon from unavailable to
available in the drivers list dialog but the driver still works. If this
is your problem then the Interbase driver should be useable. The icon
fixes itself when SQuirreL restarts. I haven't been able to duplicate
this problem.
- Try placing the driver jars in your CLASSPATH or in your jre/lib/ext
directory. I've had some reports of older drivers (I can't remember
which drivers/DBMS's now) where the driver wouldn't work when specified
in the "Extra Classpath" tab. Updating to the latest drivers fixed this
problem.
- Which version of Firebird server and JDBC driver are you using? Which
operating system and Java version? If you're using java 1.3.0 I'd
recommend upgrading to at least 1.3.1, preferably 1.4. 1.3.0 has a
number of serious problems.
