Hi,
I too faced the same problem in my new laptop which had java 1.4.1_01
and had posted the problem here.
The problem is attributed to a bug in JRE 1.4.1 + ATI RADEON video
driver. More details about this bug could be found at

edit the squirrel startup script and pass the following startup
parameter to java:
-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
