It is definitely that bug. Stroke me too after I updated my video drivers, *extreme showstopper* which puzzled me two weeks long.

Alternative command line option: "-Dsun.java2d.d3d=3Dfalse", this disables *only* the Direct3D optimizations (the ones which conflict with the ATI drivers) thus still allowing some other optimizations. "-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=3Dtrue" disables the *whole* DirectDraw, including Direct3D.
