In version 1.1beta2 of SQuirreL SQL Client the
licence will be changed from the GPL to the
LGPL. because of the "viral" nature of the
GPL. In SQuirreL SQL Client version 1.0 it
wasn't an issue but in version 1.1 with the
addition of plugins it has become one.
My intention with plugins was not to force a
particular licence on the developer. I intended
that the plugin developer could release their
plugin under any licence they wanted although
only those under an OSI recognized open source
licence could be released through the SQuirreL
project on SourceForge (because of SourceForge
rules). However according to the FAQ on the FSF
site http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLAndPlugins
the viral nature of the GPL means that all
plugins have to be released under a GPL
compatible licence.
In order to give "freedom of choice" to the
plugin developers the client program will now be
released under the LGPL.
