Mercy,
I would start by copy/pasting the characters into a text editor that is known to work correctly with Chinese characters. The expected result is that you'll be able to see the characters there. If that is true, then you know that SQuirreL is correctly getting the Chinese characters and the only problem is the font.
Jim Yin suggested changing to another L&F. You made no comment about whether you did that or which ones you tried. How did that go?
