I'm looking at changing the licence for the SQuirreL application itself from the GPL to the LGPL becauseof the "viral" nature of the GPL. In version 1.0 it wasn't an issue but in version 1.1 with the addition of plugins it has become one. My intention with plugins was not to force a particular licence on them. I intended that the plugin developer could release their plugin under any licence they wanted although only those under an OSI recognized open source licence could be released through the SQuirreL project on SourceForge (because of SourceForge rules). However according to the FAQ on the FSF site http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLAndPlugins the viral nature of the GPL means that all plugins have to be released under a GPL compatible licence. In order to give "freedom of choice" to the plugin developers I intend to change the licence of SQuirrel to the LGPL from the next release 1.1beta2. If anybody has a problem with this change (or if they think it won't give the required freedom to plugin developers) yell now. I don't want to change the licence, find its still not correct and then have to change it again. Col |
