Not sure why you didn't see a desktop launcher icon, but
I can assure you that I do most of my development and testing on
Ubuntu. Here is a little screencast I made on my Ubuntu desktop
installing SQuirreL 2.6.8 with Sun Java 1.6 :
http://www.squirrelsql.org/screencast/install-squirrel-2_6_8.ogg
Notice the icon appears near the end of the video in the top-left
corner of the desktop. If you have Ubuntu then Totem should be
able to play it. I recorded it with Istanbul (http://live.gnome.org/Istanbul)
which is an extremely easy tool to install and use on Debian distros.
Do you have a Sun jvm and how about the version of Ubuntu ?
