Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough.  I didn't mean the actual expanded (and pinnable) aliases and drivers panels, I meant the tabs in the left margin that you mention.  In older versions, those weren't there, and I would rather have the extra 1/2 inch of space in my main window, if possible, and open aliases and drivers from the menu and/or drop down lists.
