My take is that I prefer avoiding bloating a good product. (If it can be done via a plugin it would be fine, of course.)
BTW: Notepad++ has SQL syntax highlighting as well and does macros (I hardly ever use that, regex covers my needs).
Its "Smart Highlighting" is very useful, because it highlights all identical strings without having to use the search function first. But I do not request that as a feature in SQuirreL.
Notepad++ under Linux (using WINE) worked most of the time for me, YMMV
