This is the intended behavior. You can force Squirrel to interpret a date column as a timestamp. To do this, go to - Global Preferences => Data Type Controls => Date => "Interpret DATE columns as TIMESTAMP"

It would be very nice, if you keep this as a default behaviour for oracle database at least.
