New in 2012, Squawk Box began as a project to create a video game system and suite for an African Grey Parrot named "Ripley." The software component of the project, hosted here, is written in C, using the SDL, cairo, SDL_image, and SDL_mixer libraries.

The Squawk Box controller, still of experimental design, has been built with safety and resiliency in mind, so that test subjects can easily use it without risk of injury to themselves of the controller. Its button and joystick layout is duplicated on most screens in order to emphasize the connection between physical actions and on-screen consequences.

Squawk Box currently features eight applications designed to teach and test names of colors and numbers, rudimentary problem solving, and vocabulary.
