A killer feature would be the ability to read in a
tarball instead of a live filesystem.

This can be done by untarring the tarball into a temporary directory (i.e. a ramdisk), and running Mksquashfs on that.
To do this in Mksquashfs would entail adding support to read tarballs into Mksquashfs which is impractical, and unnecessary when the objective can be achieved using only two shell commands.
