We have several column in a legacy db that are stored as AES_ENCRYPTed
blobs. I would like to make a subclass of BLOBCol that will handle
this for me.
My plan would be to have it wrap all accesses with AES_DECRYPT(SSN,
'password') and all sets with AES_ENCRYPT(value, 'password'). Is there
a good way to do this?
I have already tested
Instructors.select(func.AES_DECRYPT(Instructors.q.SSN,'password').endswith('9'))
which works as expected, but the SSN atributes are still encrypted. I
would like to make a new column type so that all the goodies like
bySSN() will work. Also, I dont want to have to put __set_SSN and
__get_SSN in each class that needs them. If I cant easily make a new
column type, is there an easy way to execute an sqlbuilder.func call?

Hello.
The real conversion is performed by a validator. So for a new column
class you need a validator class, an SOCol class that will create the
validator, and a Col class that will be used as a column description.
The best examples are in col.py module. See how PickleCol is
implemented.

I've got that working for reads and writes, so "id = i.SSN" and "i.SSN = '999999999' " work as expected. The problem is I cant figure out a way to search by an encrypted field. At the very least I think the bySSN method should run the argument through the from_python part of the validator. It would be nice if select and selectBy also did I can see how this would be more complicated. I have a custom subclass of SQLObject that all of my real classes derive from. As a hack, is there a good way to monkey-patch all of the by* methods of encrypted columns with a wrapper function? This may be a dirty hack, but the following works for me. In main.py
around line 1297 add this at the top of the function
SQLObject._findAlternateID:
from_python = getattr(cls, '_SO_from_python_' + name)
if from_python:
value = from_python(value, cls)
There are a few other related features I'd like to add, but the code
is kinda hard to grok. Do you have any sort of developer documentation
or a general description of what is where?

Shame on me, it took more than two years to resolve the issues. But
finally it is done! Now .selectBy(), .deleteBy() and .by*() methods pass
all values through .from_python(), not only unicode.
