Actually, my fix worked and I simply failed to assign DateTime objects
as values as I should have.  So the following seems to work just fine:

dtval=DateTime.DateTime(1997,12,5)
p = Person.new(enumTest='aaa', username="johnd", dtTest=dtval)
dt=DateTime.now()
p.dtTest=dt
