I observe periodic (2-3 times a month) crashes in sqlgrey (weird garbage 
collection panics) but I can't see anything glaringly obvious that could 
be the cause. I wrote a program that I run out of cron every five 
minutes, that restarts the daemon if it discovers that there's nothing 
listening on the socket.

I filed a bug report about this on the SF page, and provided the program 
that does the watching. You should be able to adapt it pretty easily to 
suit your environment. But other than that, my hack is good enough, and 
so I haven't the tuits to investigate the issue further.
