When connecting to AWS Athena using the Athena jdbc connector you need to specify the usual connection parameters:
URL, user, password
but you need also to specify an extended parameter: S3OutputLocation
Without it the connection failed.

check Connection String Attributes Separator
as described in https://s3.amazonaws.com/athena-downloads/drivers/JDBC/SimbaAthenaJDBC_2.0.6/docs/Simba+Athena+JDBC+Driver+Migration+Guide.pdf
you can append those properties at the url end using
& and ?
or ;
depending of the version used.
