A SID (more properly, an $ORACLE_SID) is an Oracle System ID
every box has one and it tags which set of databases and tablespaces
go where. It is a somewhat clumsy mechanism but it's what we
have to work with.
On my box I do this:
echo $ORACLE_SID
And I get back: oralin
which is what I set it to on installation (way back when.)
