Yes to #3! After some more thought #3 is what I came up with too. That is to say: It would be most convinent I think to simply put a limit on the number of records returned. There could be a criteria field adjusted from the search page for maximum flexiblity where 0 or blank could mean return all records and it could default to say 1000 or default from a new field added to the user record(or where?) For now I'm just going to see if I can hardcode a LIMIT of 1000 in the SQL statment. That is if Postgres supports the LIMIT clause like MySQL does. Otherwise I'll have to put a limit on the loop that generates the HTML. Either way, but the SQL way would be more efficient. Accounts are linked with keywords. You see them listed when you go to setup and list the accounts. In a prior message I explained what these keywords mean. The messages are archived at sourceforge. A link to the archive can be found at http://www.sql-ledger.org/misc/support.html Also checkout the screenshots page. It gives a bit of an explaination what you can do and how some things work. Is there any documentation available (appart from the homepage FAQ) for SQL-Ledger, basically for a bit of a beginner, that explains some of the interfaces? Although I've been doing my own very-small-business accounts for 20+ years I obviously don't get the way accounts are linked here. I'd love to get to grips with SQL-Ledger since I use perl and postgres in our web business and it's the first package I've seen that fits the way we do most things via a browser and web/db back- end. It also appears to offer everything we need, but without the crazy overbloat that off-the-shelf commercial packages bewilder us with. Thomas, I just fired up the system and so I have not retrieved an inventory of items yet, but if it puts them into a large html table then you could get a count first and the set the size of the table first. The will speed up the loading of the page if the browser knows the size of the table first (it fills at it goes instead of waiting for the complete download and then putting the table on the screen) Or you could set up a cursor to fetch 20 at a time. I don't have these solutions directly in front of me and am doing from memory on some inventory issues from a previous job. There are examples in PHP postgres on how to do this and there is some CPAN stuff for postgres on how to do this. I'll look around and see what I can come up with. John C. Rick, You will probably have to review your directory structure in http.conf What is it? on redhat for example, it is home/http/html/ and all standard docs are here - the doc root for the web. If you have it located in /home/http/sql-ledger/ for example, it is forbidden because it is not in the document root Go to yourconfiguration file for apache, if that's what you're using, read through it with your directory structure in mind, and you should be able to fix it. Good luck JC Richard Eicher II wrote: > I get a 403 Forbidden when I try to pull up > setup.cgi. I have configure the .htaccess and > ..htpasswd files. Hi again... The bigger thing is that I just loaded up the database with 25,000+ inventory records! Postgresql handled it nicely, loading them from an .sql file of insert staements in about 5 minutes. But when I went to my windows client machine and did an inventory search on all the items it took nearly 30 minutes to load the page! It worked though so that's good! The slow down apparently comes from building such a large page --not so much the transfer via the network. CGI Perl isn't all that fast. Is there any way to speed this up? One thing that happened during the course of this load is that Windows 2000 reported that it needed to increase Virtual memory to complete the operation I bet it did! That's one big .html file! I have to get this working with this a large inventory. So I'm looking at adding some selection criteria limitations to the ic.cgi script. I'm thinking of adding limiting criteria where one has to select the first and second letter of the search. (i.e. Aa, Ab, Ac...Zx, Zy, Zz) How does this sound to you all? A nice summary! Thank you. I'll save this email. Looks like I'll be putting together some documentation based on these emails. I played with sql-ledger some more and it all makes sense now, expect for one thing. The taxes for customer invoices and vendor invoices should not be the same should they? I mean a customer may pay in-state taxes to you while you may pay varying taxes in-state or out-of-state or what-not to your vendors. How does one deal with this? I suppose in most cases it will be either an in-state GRT (general receipts tax) or Exempt, but I imagine there could be other cases. Also it looks as if you have to use one of the two tax entires for Exempt (i.e. 0%) since there are only two choices, right? -- Thomas Sawyer ps...@on... - email (303) 285-3487 x1594 - voicemail/fax ---- Dieter Simader <dsi...@sq...> wrote: > The links tie everything together. The links tie everything together. They also indicate which accounts are to be included in the drop down lists. --- Edit Account --- Account type: Type of account (Asset, Liability, ....) Heading -> this is a header only Account -> regular account Is this a summary account to record [ AR | AP | IC ] -> check either AR, AP, IC if it is a collection account for receivables, payables or inventory In the Link account to: section the boxes indicate Receivables: Income -> use this account to record income Tax 1 -> tax you collect Tax 2 -> ditto for second level tax Deposit -> where you put the money you receive from your customers Payables: Expense/Asset -> record expenses and assets you purchase Tax 1 -> tax you pay when you purchase goods or services Tax 2 -> ditto Payment -> account you use to pay for purchases Parts Inventory: Sales -> record sales for items sold COGS -> record expense for sold items Service Items: Income -> record sales for services sold Expense -> record expense when you purchase a service The "Link" setup is another way of linking accounts by entering the account numbers. It is quicker to link the accounts but you have to know the account numbers beforehand. Dieter Simader http://www.sql-ledger.org (780) 472-8161 DWS Systems Inc. Been through this. Basically you have to get your permissions right, and there are four kinds to worry about! Personally I wish some one could think of a beeter way! Anyhoo... (1) You have to get file permissions right on the install directory. One way to do this is to give complete access on the install directory from top to bottom to everyone until you get it working and then come back and make the directory structure more secure. I did this and what I ended up with in the end is everything being owned by root and most of the files and directories having a group the same as my web server's username with full group permissions set. Probably not the most secure, but not the worst either. (2) Once that's taken care of you need to make sure your postgres postmaster user account is set up. When first used the account has no password and needs one made as far as I can tell (Warning: do not delete this user account!). You'll need this account to manipulate the postgresql databases or at least to create another user who can. That user's name and password will then need to be put into sql-ledger account's file when you finally get to the setup.cgi page so that sql-ledger can access the postegres database. Make sense? (3) Then there is the .htaccess and .htpasswd files which apache uses for security. This security is only used to protect the setup.cgi script. These files are hidden so you need to do a 'ls -a' to see them. Anyway you can just delete them if you trust your users or edit them to have the correct entries. If I remember correctly there's a setting somewhere to designate where to find the .htpasswd file for the .htaccess file.(unclear?) Finally, (4) Within the setup.cgi page you'll also define a username and password for getting into sql-ledger itself (other then this setup.cgi script). Does this help? Someone should start compiling these emials for documentation. Is anyone out there saving them all? -- Thomas Sawyer ps...@on... - email (303) 285-3487 x1594 - voicemail/fax ---- Richard Eicher II <win...@ya...> wrote: > I get a error when trying to access setup.cgi. > What do I do to fix this. Hi All, I have been working through the issues of SQL-Ledger, to see if it is possible to run my business off it. At this moment it does not look like that I will be able to use the Sql-ledger for my business as the tracking of payments from customers and bill paying does not seem to be there. The tracking that seems to be missing, is the tracking of cheque numbers, payment type (cash or cheque etc), and the dates of part payments. Things that I really liked about the software, is the way the chart of accounts works, and the links idea is great. Networking of the package is excellent, with in just over a slow Internet connection, sql-ledger is quite useful. -------------------------------- Some suggestions for the future. -------------------------------- Have the dates field fill in with a suggested date of todays date.. Important if you about to make an invoice to hand to someone.. of course one can change the before finishing the invoice. Just wondering if a invoice is printed should it be posted at the same time? as a invoice can printed from the browser, but if one hits one of the menu items from the frame the invoice would have disappeared forever from the system, even through the invoice was printed. The recording of part payments, cheque numbers, payment type. The show of what a customer owes when listing the customers Purchase orders, it would be great to trace your inventory right from the time of ordering items. --------------------------------------------------------------- Some problems that I can see as the sql-ledger fills up with Transactions --------------------------------------------------------------- There could be a problem with Netscape with large drop down lists to select a customer to bill etc.. that if a business has quite a few hundred customers. The recording of payment details on the original receipts.. it's in fact changing the invoice after it has been posted. Not sure but it could be better if the payment s should up on a separate Statement, or a printable receipt Other things that I have noticed. --------------------------------- Sql-ledger works great with KDE web browser Konqueror Looks like that SQL-Ledger one day will be a great package. Cheers Mark Williamson |

I get a error when trying to access setup.cgi. What do I do to fix this. Apache is running as apache apache. I do not find a .htaccess file. I am using apache 1.3.12-25 and postgreSQL 7.0.3-2 on Redhat 7.0. I am sure this is something easy. Thank you for your time, rick __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Mail - only $35 a year! http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/ |

TO WHOMEVER KNOWS :) I do not fully understand the accounting links. Currently I am putting together a Chart of Accounts. Do the links simply indicate in more detail what an account is, or do they actually effect the activities of the system? And the seperate Link Setup Screen, what is it all about? Aside, but related, is anyone working on documentation? -- Thomas Sawyer ps...@on... - email (303) 285-3487 x1594 - voicemail/fax __________________________________________________ FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. SOLVED IT! (yes, this is exciting, to me, anyway). The problem has to do with the auto/DBD/Pg permissions. I missed that directory. It's all working now. I knew I was overlooking something. I noticed this folder after doing another reinstall of DBD::Pg. The default permissions don't allow nobody.whatever to access the correct modules, yet the DBI was ok, hence, the weird error. -----Original Message----- From: David Rippel [mailto:dr...@ri...] Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 9:27 AM To: 'sql...@li...' Subject: RE: [SQL-Ledger-users] Problems with logging in to sql-ledger I moved the modules from site-perl to just the i386-linux and set the permissions to a=r for all modules, a=rx for all directories related to the DBD/DBI modules, and still, to no avail, I get the same error. I even tried adding a -I line to specifically direct the login.cgi to the proper directories and it still fails. This is really driving me INSANE! I have no idea what the problem is at this point, I'm sure it's something really stupid that I am missing. I'm using Slackware 7.1, maybe there's some specific issues there? I'm almost tempted to reinstall Perl. I'd try this with ActiveState ActivePerl, but I cannot find any PPM support for DBD::Pg. I've been stuck on this for 3 days now! Is there any way to increase debugging output from what's shown below? To quote the original error message from Apache's error_log: > > install_driver(Pg) failed: Can't locate loadable object for module DBD::Pg > > in @INC (@INC contains: utils /usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5 > > /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at (eval > 1) > > line 3 > > Compilation failed in require at (eval 1) line 3. > > Perhaps a module that DBD::Pg requires hasn't been fully installed > > at /usr/local/apache/htdocs/sql-ledger/login.cgi line 66 > > [Mon Jan 29 09:19:20 2001] [error] [client 192.168.3.179] Premature end of > > script headers: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/sql-ledger/login.cgi -----Original Message----- From: ufo...@ea... Be sure that you have the modules in the first one. What I did after I found the problem was jsut to copy the modules to that dir. I think this also is affecting Ian. So Ian, please check this also.
