I am attempting to install SQL Ledger 1.8.1 on Win32. Cygwin, Postgres, Apache all seem OK. The instructions tell me to access .../sql-ledger/admin.pl to connect to a database. However, admin.pl does not exist in the sql-ledger/ directory. Only scripts there are login.pl and am.pl. there is an admin.pl in .../mozilla/bin, but this has no #! on the first line and thus does not appear to be coded to be called directly. I had to modify login.pl as it does not seem to parse Win32 paths correctly, and this may have prevented it from calling /mozilla/bin/admin.pl, but I may be totally off base with this. I can't log in. I could set up the members file by hand if I could work out its format, but I'd prefer to avoid working backward from the Perl code if possible. Can someone please explain - or possibly post an example members file so that I can set up manually. Does anyone have any good web resources on using DBD::Pg with Cygwin and ActivePerl? I'm getting "file not found" errors on the postgres socket connect when I try to connect to my SQL-ledger DB with my own program. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dieter Simader" <dsi...@sq...> > Here is that clue hammer! good shot ! #8-) ok, I think I got it... here is custom_am.pl (the one you send to me) and custom_menu.pl that move the content of the bottom frame to the left frame so there is more screen space and sql-ledger look better... I tested this with links & IE6 and so far so good... anyways, I think it will be much of a burden to mantain this with future releases, so if this is of no interest I will have to live with the bottom frame... thanks for the clue, /sergio |

Here is that clue hammer!
# custom_login.pl
1;
# end
sub login {
# modified to your needs
}
# eof
This code is pulled in and replaces the standard login function
in login.pl. There is no need to change any of the modules and you can
upgrade anytime keeping your mods. Of course, if I add some new stuff,
like another menu item, you'd have to adapt your custom menu too or you
won't have it available.
It's explained in more detail in the
http://www.sql-ledger.org/feature/api.html page

Hi, At the risk of seeming completely ignorant, I would like to ask if there is any documentation on the set-up of accounts in the list and what functions the different check boxes will perform? I am new to accounting and new to the open source world (My husband is the geek in the family!), but am trying to set up the books for our new business! So, I am a bit confused about a few of the choices I need to make as I add accounts. 1)Do I need to fill in such boxes as "Is this a summary act to record A/R, A/P, Inventory"? Is this information critical to creating reports? 2)Same question for the section on the form that says "Include Drop-down Menus" with Receivables, Payables, Parts Inventory, Service. 3)What is a GIFI code? Again, any information or a nudge in the right direction would be a great help! Thanks, -- Sandy _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The problem with http authentication is, you have to use a server with authentication. It also adds another layer of complexity. As for using PAM, SL users are independant from system users. You do not need a *NIX login for the user. Dieter Simader http://www.sql-ledger.org (780) 472-8161 DWS Systems Inc. This may help:
After some trial-and-error, this installation sequence worked for
me...
INSTRUCTIONS: PostgreSQL and Perl DBD on SuSE 7.3
1. Install the following using YaST2:
(Suggestion: Install each line-item below in a separate YaST2
session.)
- Development/Libraries/Perl: perl-DBI
- Applications/Databases: all postgresql modules
- Development Libraries: postgresql-devl
2. Setup directories and paths for PostgreSQL:
> su - (change to root)
Setup disk directory for your db:
# mkdir /var/lib/pgsql/data
# chown postgres /var/lib/pgsql/data
- Put PostgreSQL path /usr/local/pgsql/bin into PATH in
/etc/profile.local
3. Initialize the database, start it, and test it:
# /usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /var/lib/pgsql/data
# rcpostgresql start
Quick-test the server:
# su postgres
> psql -d template1
\q to exit psql
Setup another db user:
> createuser <db-user> (should matach an existing Linux user)
Shall the new user be able to create databases? (y/n) y
Shall the new user be able to create new users? (y/n) n
Note: SuSE 7.3 appears to have a Pg DBD, but I could not get it to
work,
so...
4. Verify the existence of the following, which are required for the
DBD:
- /usr/include/pgsql/libpq-fe.h
- /usr/lib/libpq.so
5. Manually download DBD::Pg from www.CPAN.org .
6. Expand and examine the downloaded components:
- su to the <db-user> you setup for db access, but NOT root!
- Expand DBD-Pg-1.01.tar.gz into your favorite directory.
- Read the README file.
7. Prepare for the build:
> PATH=.:$PATH
> export POSTGRES_INCLUDE=/usr/include/pgsql
> export POSTGRES_LIB=/usr/lib
8. Try the build:
> perl Makefile.PL
> make
- Verify no errors from the make.
> make test
- Verify all "ok" from the make test.
9. Do the final DBD install:
> su - (and cd back to the build directory, if necessary)
# make install
DBD-Pg is installed!

Now that we've been using sql-ledger more heavily, I noticed some quirks in user-behavior (yes PEOPLE are the idiots - not the program) and I thought others might have the same interests... Before I go off on too much of a tangent making unnecessary software modifications, I thought I might solicit other folks thoughts on these ideas.... there might be easier solutions ;) 1. DECIMAL PLACE DEPTH - I have a number of items that are sold in fractional cents, 5000 pcs @ $0.0022 etc. I changed the sprintf %.2d to %.4d in the format_amount function, but I have noticed that I get different totals when I print out a form - v.s. the total indicated at the bottom of the invoice screen, I don't have that one figured out yet. But anyway, it might be useful to others to have in the setup screen an option for number of decimals. Some folks have suggested in the past to change units to a larger unit (i.e. pack/100), however since I manufacture a product, I have to keep UOM=1 since the item is purchased and consumed in that unit. 2. MAKE MODEL LOOKUPS to locate part numbers. With the current (great) design a part number can have associated makemodel rows with it, such that: TOPLEVEL PART NUMBER ACCEPTABLE PART 1 ACCEPTABLE PART 2 When entering an invoice, I need a point in the right direction so that I can either enter the toplevel part number into a sales order/invoice/bill of materials, OR one of the acceptable parts and have it relate to the toplevel part number automatically. This of course opens a whole can of worms - on a Purchase Order for example it might be beneficial to display the specific vendor's part number rather than MY part number because they may be very different. Example: I have a part I call PLCC84-SN-NL which is an 84 pin PLCC socket, with tin plated contacts, and no locating pegs.. One manufacturer (Amphenol) Calls it an 822281-1 Another (Berg) Calls it PLCC84P-T-SMT When I purchase the part, my PO needs to say 822281-1 when I buy it from AMP, and PLCC84P-T-SMT when purchasing from BERG But, when we receive the item into stock we need to somehow know that its a PLCC84-SN-NL. This might not be an issue if the "Merchandise Received" screen also translates the vendor part numbers. Of course when a pick list is printed, it needs to show our part number. 3. LOGICAL FIELDS TO INDICATE "PRINTED" OR "EMAILED" For any form - Vendor invoice, purchase order, sales order, etc. It might be nice to have a logical database field for "Printed" or "Emailed" -- this comes from entering a PO or such and saving it, (and later my cheeze brain can't remember If I ever sent it to the vendor ;) WHOOPS! This could also be used in the event that you sent an invoice, quote, etc via email.. then for some reason updated and saved the quote. The system could check to see that it has been previously sent via email and ask if an updated copy should be transmitted as well. 4. AUTOMATIC SAVE ON PRINT/EMAIL Also related to printing/emailing invoices... what if printing or emailing invoices/etc also automatically saved the record.... to prevent forgetting to post a customer invoice for example when writing up their pick ticket. ================= Any thoughts/tips on how to accomplish such would be appreciated If anyone is interested when I am done, I can post or submit for inclusion in another release. Thanks. I did the same to test links a few months but never got around

You can apply your changes in a custom_login.pl script. Then you add a custom_menu.pl and change the menu to include the "Setup" link and from the setup menu (it's in am.pl) you link back to the main menu. This is what the API is for. Then you send me the code and I'll make it available for others. Dieter Simader http://www.sql-ledger.org (780) 472-8161 DWS Systems Inc. I hope I'm not being a bother by posting this. I'm trying to get sql-ledger set up and I'm having problems with it. I've yet to be able to log in as a user, and the admin section keeps hanging on me. I'll try to login as the admin sometimes and it just hangs and doesn't do anything. There are no errors in my apache logs when this happens. This behavior is all through the admin section. As well as when I finally had created a user and tried to log in with that. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks! -- Adam Brown |

If screen real estate is of a premium you can run a frameless version too. Pass terminal=lynx on the URL when you log in and you'll get the lynx menu. hi, dieter (no dietmar), is there any reason you do not use http authentication (be it basic o digest) ? is my idea that it will more cleaner and simpler, and you don't have to pass login & password in every link... (using http auth you have suppor from the browser and the http server) /sergio ps: and then ideally the challenge of login/password can be made against dbusers/IMAP/PAM (http://search.cpan.org/search?module=Authen::PAM) but this is another history... |

hi dietmar, one of the problems we have here is screen real state, many users still insist on using 640x480, so the utilization of the screen space must be done with care... I noted that in sql-ledger the bottom frame is not the most utilized, in fact it contains things that are rarely utilized (say 5% of the time), BUT the frame is displayed 100% of the time, and I think that is not fair... so attached is a patch that put the content of the bottom frame below the left frame, note that you still have to put an "Accounting" link when you go to "Setup". the problem I didn't put that link is that I cannot found the file that display the user's setup menu :) (it shouldn't be in that same file ?) and the names of the files aren't helping... ;) what do you think ? also, I have a half cooked patch that fix the no-use of the css & putting "<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 //EN"> <html>" in most of the pages... (because that pages are not valid html) are you interested in this ? /sergio |

Hi, I'm trying to find out how taxes on products work in the US. Here in Europe it works this way: A company is obligated to pay tav or not. (THis is usually dependend on country) On a product there can be: luxure goods taxes: on cars, alcohol and sigarets for exemple. Dependend on product importtaxes: Is dependend on product low tav or high tav How is this in the US? Roland |

I'm going to obtain a copy of the data I'm using after the project and testing out the tweak there. -Qaexl- |

My interest in the discussion of indexes grew so great I went to the
mountain (postgres mailing list) and asked. Here is an exact answer
that agrees with the others I got.
Thanks Andrew,

True, if you're not using a locale other than C. If you are, you'll
get a seqscan no matter what.

That is certainly true. I think that's where the other tweak -- increasing the memory available to PG from 1 MB to 50 MB seems to help the most. The figures I tossed around in the first email were for ar/ap reports; the figures I tossed around in the second email were for parts. The actual time savings weren't very much, but to human psychology it was different, it was smoother, it was closer to being more responsive like a desktop GUI app. Can I prove it? Probably not. I just know that I don't feel like throwing a boot through the monitor due to waiting. I'm tempted to have the queries logged onto a file for a day while the staff does their normal stuff, and then run explains/benchmarks against the log. > If you run a database with 10,000+ tuples in the parts table it certainly > pays off to change the backend from a fuzzy search to an exact search. It's those other operations like getting an AR aging report or a AR transaction list sliced by dates that saw the best improvements. I've written another report module that summerizes "today's sales" which requires joins against the customer/vendor tables. While those queries didn't touch the parts table, they definately saw some speed improvements. Probably because there were 1000 rows in the vendor table and 22,000 rows in the customer table. -Qaexl- |
