Good morning, My name is Enzo Puliatti. I am the Chairman of IT Synergy ( www.itsyn.com ). We have an ongoing project aimed to spread the usage of SQL-Ledger for SMEs in Egypt and we are working on many localization and customization issues. However, we have recently faced a bureaucratic issue and we are trying to find out if there is any experience on GAAP certification for SQL-Ledger or at least a clear "how-to do". Have you done anything in this sense in your country or are you aware of any successful or ongoing effort in this senses? I do understand that this may be different from country to country but we would like to start from some established experience. If nobody has collected these procedure we are most willing to collect all information and share it with all you. For those of you that (like me) are not to familiar with accounting procedures and rules, the idea is to be able to completely replace manual bookkeeping (or "hybrid") with a fully computerized one using SQL-Ledger. I personally don't like the idea of using SL in my company and then having the accountant manually copying the information in a different format to present it to the relevant authorities. A second issue is related to management of fixed assets. I have seen several scattered posting about this issue without a clearly defined procedures. This topic is also not mentioned in the manual and other documentation that I have found online. The basic question is: how to treat the purchasing, inventorying and depreciation of fixed assets and other consumable that are meant to be used for the company itself and not for resale? Thanks and regards, Enzo Puliatti -- _____________ Vincenzo Puliatti Chairman,IT Synergy Cairo Smart Village, Egypt +20 2 5371020 www.itsyn.com |

I believe MRMS has a standard Jet database back-end. You should be able to make an ODBC/DAO/ADO/whatever connection to it via MS-Access or your favorite SQL scripting utility and get at the raw tables. Crystal Reports or one of the DataViz products might be of some help too if they are available. Hi, I just bought SQL-Ledger and am working my way through, I'm guessing, the typical issues with setting up a new company. My question is how do I get all the info out of MRMS? The inventory exports ok but the client list only get names and phone numbers. Nothing else. I can't get to the history at all. I don't have any vendors to deal with in MRMS so I get to start from scratch with them in SQL-Ledger. I used SQL-Ledger back in the 2.4.x days. It has come a long way baby. Best that I can tell, SQL-Ledger handles this well. While my product costs don't widely fluctuate, if you keep up with receiving and vendor invoices (meaning process in a timely manner), SL should take care of COGS well...it does for me. > > How do I enter products in my system to track, but not put a price on them > until I actually purchase them from my suppliers? If I set something up that I intend to bring into stock, I typically set the item up with "Last Cost" being equal to what the cost is when I set the item up. As above, if you buy the item, receive the PO and process the vendor invoice in a timely manner, SL will calculate last cost based on that data. > > I partially started with SQL-Ledger in order to have a FIFO inventory > accounting system for cost of goods sold for tax reporting purposes. > > How do I accomplish this? Hello, all. I have been forum digging (or mailing list digging) for the last hour or so and am having a hard time finding information. I am new to SQL-Ledger, and do not know if people on this list are generally hostile towards those (such as myself) who have not purchased the commercial Reference Manual (business can't afford it at this time), but any help would be appreciated. I have a functional knowledge of double-entry, accrual-basis accounting. For example, when I sell something and get paid by PayPal (which is most often the case), I debit PayPal Account (the asset account) and credit inventory. Similarly, I would debit inentory and credit cash when I purchase something, etc. Here are my concerns: 1. I have both a website and eBay sales presence. This means that: - My sale prices are not always the same. - Shipping costs are not always the same (eBay customers pay shipping, website customers do not) - and also, my product costs are not always the same. How do I enter products in my system to track, but not put a price on them until I actually purchase them from my suppliers? Each time I buy, the price of the product and shipping fluctuates, meaning my Cost of Goods Sold fluctuates. I partially started with SQL-Ledger in order to have a FIFO inventory accounting system for cost of goods sold for tax reporting purposes. How do I accomplish this? I am afraid right now of starting down one path and then it being wrong. 2. A fine point I am confused about: I assume to enter a new order, I would go to "POS" and select "Sale", enter the sale and save it. However, the only "Record in" option I see is "Accounts Receivable." I was taught that when you have already received payment (cash or, say, PayPal), it goes in your cash or PayPal account respectively. How do I add those options to the "Record in" drop-down box in the POS page. 3. Why is there the "Checking Account/Petty Cash" drop-down box below the box in question one, on that same POS page? I thought that, for example, a sale was supposed to credit inventory and debit cash. Or debit checking account. I have no accounts receivable, only received payment (paypal, check or cash) and inventory to send out. 4. Inventory: I understand I can enter inventory items, however, I purchase the same items that fluctuate in price all the time. I wanted to use SQL-Ledger partially as a way to calculate Cost of Goods Sold for the tax year. I purchase items in batches as item types but with a "custom" price each time. Am I supposed to go entering products like this, by order, each time with a different price? How do I do this, if so? Also, my "sell" price changes. On the website it is one price, though that might be adjusted, and on eBay the sell price is almost always different. How do I account for this? Thank you for any help! -- Regards, Matt Jackson |

The lack of a payroll module may be an issue, depending on whether you're using QB's right now or not. Otherwise it really depends on the nature of the business. E.g. I wouldn't put a healthcare organization on it due to the specialized insurance tracking and forms required. This is really where the MS lock-in has held sway for so long, the vast majority of businesses occupy what are called "vertical markets", i.e. they are in niche industries. And for the most part those vertical markets have a small number of applications available to serve the day to day business process needs which are highly tailored to that particular demographic and which usually require Windows. This is not always the case of course, the retail sector has a rich selection of applications for all platforms OSS and otherwise. Construction companies on the other hand have about three options and they are all Windows based. So tell us - what do you do? :) Thanks, Michael On Feb 26, 2007, at 1:02 PM, JT wrote: > ----- Original Message ---- > From: Rich Shepard <rsh...@ap...> > To: sql...@li... > Sent: Monday, February 26, 2007 2:23:25 PM > Subject: Re: [SL] Mid-size consulting firm; replacement for > QuickBooks? > > > On Mon, 26 Feb 2007, JT wrote: > >> I have used SL for my own home-office based business in the past, ... > > Ergo, you are familiar with it and know how extensive it is. > >> We will soon start to look at the Microsoft Dynamics options, but >> I am >> interested in finding out the availability of professional >> services to >> support an SL implementation in an organization of our size. > > I don't understand. I am > looking for organizations in similar situations to ours. > Sorry for not being more clear on my last post. Jeremy, Aha! Now we have something to address. :-) The direct answer to your question is that it's all dependent on the database back end. SQL-Ledger is a set of perl scripts that glue together the user interface (a textual or graphical web browser) and a database back end for storing the data. So, the limitations -- if any -- are with the database and nothing in front of it. (That's assuming that your httpd can handle the desired number of simultaneous connections.) Over the years the question of limits of PostgreSQL has been raised many times. For all practical purposes, the answer is that you'll not bump up against table row limits (some users have reported at least 10 million rows in a table). Now, if your computer and OS cannot access tables in the terrabyte size, you might run into troubles there. If, however, you have a computer with a 64bit CPU, run a 2.6,x series kernel, have fast and large hard drives, postgres will handle what you throw at it. Take a look at http://www.postgresql.org for more information. HTH, Rich -- Richard B. I experience the booking of bank account transactions as unpractical, because in each booking through General Ledger, the bank account has to be chosen from the drop down list. Is there a way to make this action quicker, by creating a link in which the bank account is already filled in in the New Journal/Tansaction page of the General Ledger? Thanks |

I see the following buttons at the bottom of a General Ledger account report: GL Transaction - AR Transaction - Sales invoice - AP Transaction - Vendor Invoice However, when I klik the buttons, I get the error message: "You are logged out!" What could be wrong? |

I need to change the invoice numbers of all AP transactions and need to know what is the quickest way to do this. Clicking on one invoice number in the AP transactions report, gives the tranaction with the amount blanked out! Thanks |

Can you be more specific of what you did to get the error ? Can you load the admin.pl page at all ? or does it give you that error after you actually enter the admin password ? Cheers, Roy |

It looks like that you can hit the schedule button when building up an invoice. After you have added the schedule you are then taken back to the invoice screen. Here it is now important to hit the 'Post' button. If this invoice is not posted then the schedule will not exist because it has no invoice to base itself on. This also means that the first invoice will show in you scheduled list. Maybe this could be looked into - with either a message saying that the invoice must now be posted for the schedule to be created. Or the 'Schedule' button should be a 'Post and Schedule'. Hmmm.... not sure. But at maybe the doc could be brought up-to-date. Kevin |
